About Ulf

PADI Course Director Ulf Mayer has been diving since the last century with 2500+ logged dives in German freshwater lakes as well as in the Mediterranean, Asia, Africa and Australian north coast. Ulf is still actively diving and when not teaching he focuses on cave diving and wreck diving.

Ulf is also Instructor Trainer for more than 15 specialties, Emergency First Response Instructor trainer and distinctive instructor trainer for two specialties. Having certified and team taught over 1000 PADI students of all levels, Ulf is considered one of the most experienced instructor trainers in the PADI Europe territory.

His instructional experience span from Thailand, the Balearic Islands, Spain, the Netherlands to Germany where he started his carreer as a PADI professional and where he today runs the Premium PADI 5 Star IDC Center Dive Community  in Essen.

With valuable experience, knowledge and the quality of instructors already trained, you can be assured of the very best quality education and introduction to the dive industry when you go for an IDC with Course Director Ulf. Since graduated as a PADI Course Director, almost 100 % IDC candidates trained by Ulf have achieved a first IE passing rate!

Ulf´s dedication to the PADI system has lead him into several PADI work groups where he helps develop new PADI programs and introduce them to the PADI instructor community. During the “Boot”-show in January 2010 he was awarded with the prestigious PADI Business Award for this work.

In addition he is the first Course Director in Germany with his IDC programs certified by the government as useful training to bring people to a level of professionalism which they can use to get over their unemployment. In fact Ulf is the first German CD with programs paid by the government.

Ulf received several prestigious PADI awards for his commitment to the PADI System, for his excellence of diver´s training and for his commitment to the protection of the underwater environment.

What is the philosophy of your company?

Professionalism combined with individuality and flexibility will bring the best of success. Better two small groups instead of one big one, better pay more for one good employee instead of paying less for two averages.

Ulf’s Background

I did my first dive somewhere in Spain with a DSD program. I went down with a divemaster, saw some nice little fish and I was convinced that this is the thing for me. During my PADI Open Water Diver course I started to wonder if I can use these underwater-skills in a professional way (without even thinking of becoming an Instructor) and from the day of my OWD certification all holidays were dive trips, all private money spend was for diving and almost all people around me were divers.

As a consequence I quit my job in the advertising industry in 2001 to work as a PADI Professional – first in Germany where I opened a Dive center in 2002, later in the Balearics and in Thailand.

I sold my PADI 5 Star IDC-Center in Phuket, Thailand and went back to Germany in 2007. Now I have my “home base” in Germany and run my IDC programs in my Divecenter Dive Community on a regular basis.

Has anything funny happened during your IDC courses?

People meet, people loose concentration, fall in love, fail the IE – and get married right after that. (True story –  IDC Germany, spring 2008)

What is the reason people should take their IDC with you?

Individual schedules
small groups (max. 4 candidates per staff member)
experienced staff
modern classrooms
perfect logistics
classes in German and English language

What are your personal diving obsessions?

Discover and explore things and dive places no one else had seen before.

What type of diving do you like the best?

All kind of diving, from diving in cold German waters with it´s sometimes mystical artifacts to the crystal clear tropical waters with its colourful marine life I enjoy all kind of diving.

What else do you like (non diving)?

Good food, good wine, good fun.

Why do you love being a PADI Course Director?

I love to introduce ambitious divers into the PADI system and the PADI family and I really like to help the candidates through the progresses during their IDC. I believe that only if we have good dive instructors the dive business in general will succeed.

What does the future hold for you?

Sooner or later I will run THE  perfect dive center somewhere in the world. Plans are already in my mind.

What does IDC Guide think of Ulf?

Ulf is a great guy who is the epitome of German efficiency, he is a lovely guy to work with, he is honest and reliable and will always deliver what he promises. We have known Ulf when he owned a dive centre in Phuket, Thailand, where he built his dive center into a PADI 5 Star IDC in the shortest possible time due to his commitment and hard work.
