About PADI Course Director

As a little kid on holidays in Spain with his parents and sisters, Joeri spent every day snorkeling, – looking for fish and critters. He was like a fish in the water from the start. When he was old enough his dad signed him up for the PADI Discover Scuba Diving program, and he was hooked.

As he grew up he started exploring parts of the world a bit further away from his home in Belgium, taking in various interesting cultures in places like Japan and China.

During his time at university studying, where he was studying to become a construction engineer, a trip to Bali and the Gili Islands in Indonesia was Joeri’s little push in the right direction. Finally he became a PADI Open Water Diver. His first year on the job in construction engineering became a very short one, because soon after being employed Joeri decided to chase his dream and become a dive instructor.

In April 2011 he arrived in Indonesia an started working his way up to Open Water Scuba Instructor. After doing most of his teaching around the Gili Islands, he gained experience in Thailand and Northern Queensland, Australia.

After his adventure outside Indonesia, Joeri decided to head back to his little island where he continued his education as a dive professional and became a PADI Course Director in June 2015.

Since then the CD has been working at Career Development Center Oceans 5 conducting 11 IDC’s a year.

PADI 5 star Career Development Center

Llocated on the beautiful island of Gili Air, in North West Lombok, only 2 hours by fast boat from Bali.

Oceans 5’s location in the Gili Air harbor allows easy access and boat launching. Our open water training dive site, equipped with training lines, is located only a 5 minute boat ride away from the dive shop. There for Oceans 5 can offer a very time efficient IDC program.

The IDC candidates get to enjoy a fresh and healthy lunch every day during their program at the resort’s restaurant Coffee and Thyme.

Philosophy

Joeri and his IDC team at Oceans 5 want new instructors to be confident and in control the moment they start teaching. That’s why a lot of workshops, supplementing the IDC curriculum, are organized. Around the Gili Islands, and most parts of Indonesia, instructors have to deal with currents. During control workshops instructor candidates learn how to provide their future students a safe and fun experience, even when there is a current present. These teaching techniques prove to be valuable and instructors are in control no matter what the dive conditions are.

During the IDC candidates train realistic situations preparing them for the teaching world.

In short, the IDC’s at Oceans 5 are not about passing an IE (Instructor Evaluation), but developing candidates into real instructors.

After the IE Oceans 5 welcomes new instructors to shadow experienced instructors during courses in order to gain experience and develop their unique teaching style. On top of that instructors are invited to do an MSDT preparation program conducted by Joeri and his colleagues to further add to their knowledge and teaching skills.

With a combined 30 years of experience on the Gili Islands, Joeri and his colleague Course Directors have built a vast network around different parts of Indonesia and beyond. Finding a job as a new instructor can prove challenging at times, but the Oceans 5 team is committed to assist candidates in finding their dream job.

Favourite Diving Activity

Joeri loves introducing his family and friends to the underwater world. He still conducts DSD’s and open water courses on a regular basis. The smiles of his students and participants provide him much satisfaction.

Joeri loves muck diving, the main dive activitiy around the Gili Islands. And the occasional big shark, manta ray or school of jack fish and barracudas is something he can appreciate very much.

Favourite Non-diving Activity

Adventure sports and sports in general is a nice break from diving for Joeri. Climbing Mount Rinjani, the 2nd highest volcano in Indonesia was one of his highlights in Indonesia. The challenge and the view on the summit is an unbelievable experience.

Once a year Joeri tries to make his way up the mountains of the Alps to enjoy a week of snowboarding.

Spending time with family and friends is something that Joeri values a lot. He enjoys cooking and BBQ-ing with his friends on a beautiful summer evening. You can’t dive the next day on a empty stomach, right?

I did my IDC with Joeri as a part of a group of 9 candidates. I really enjoyed his way of teaching and patience with all of our difficult questions. Even though our group was relatively big, he and his staff made sure everyone was proceeding in good pace and no one was left behind. That obviously led to the result of all of us passing our examination with good scores. I can only recommend doing your instructor training with him!
