Platinum Course Director (again!)
Congratulations to Steve Prior, one of our Founding Course Directors who has already met the requirements to retain his Platinum Course Director status (the highest status) next year and it’s only the start of July.
Dive Students Questions
Here are some sample questions and answers from people that want to become dive instructors
Q- In the next 6 months i am hoping to start a scuba dive internship I am currently a non qualified diver hoping to achieve my IDC and my MSDT and maybe further that as long as i can secure a long career in the dive industry , just after some advice really ,i am serious about my career change and am prepared to work hard to get there.
A – Thanks for the email, what steps have you made currently? have you tried diving yet? have you gone to your local dive club yet to ask for a try dive in their pool? have you booked your internship? we have been in exactly the same position as you so know the excitement of such a big change in life is offset by the fact that there is so many things to sort out and take care of so we probably have lots of the answers. Give us a reply to the above and we can probably give some good advice.
There is a world of adventure out there waiting for anyone but you need to be prepared to adjust to work in another climate / culture / country with sometimes with the hassle of work permits / visa runs and corrupt officials (depending on your resort of choice). Make sure you do your Internship or IDC in a resort you would like to stay in yourself making sure the diving is good so dont end up at a place that gives you a ‘great deal’ but you end up living and working in a place that where diving conditions are horrible with bad vis and tired dive sites.
I would recommend doing some fun dives with the centre you choose first to see if you are going to like it and get on with them but if you want recommendations for places to do an internship. I would say you have a world of choice but would like to think you would want to do it either in Egypt, Thailand (Phuket not Pattaya) on in the Caribbean in Honduras, there are other places in the world but these tick all the right boxes for quality diving / volume of customers / fun / lifestyle / and potential for making a great start to your diving career.
PADI IDC Guide Revision DVD
We recently have re-launched this dvd to ensure you get the best information possible for your prospective IDC courses that we hope you are planning. The DVD now contains sample instructor CVs for you to tailor for yourself once you complete and pass your PADI IDC and IE. The disk doesnt contain any PADI documents or text and we will never sell original exams from the PADI IDC or IE, so don’t bother asking:) Even if you could get hold of the original exams it would be a dangerous thing to do to cheat during your IDC and IE as you have you know your subject 100% before you can look after real students.
There are no short cuts to being a dive instructor and I suggest you study the dive revision and get as much pool time with students as you can in the lead up to your IDC course.
PADI CDC in Second Life
I just visited the most perfect dive center ! A client let me have a look into their ‘virtual’ world and was pleased to see that PADI have a Career Development Center built there, you can even go for a virtual dive ! quite impressive really. Take a look at Second Life, although I warn you its a bit addictive !
PADI Platinum Course Directors
Congratulations to one of our founding Course Directors here at idc-guide, Steve Prior, Steve does his IDCs in the UK and in Egypt, has just been awarded PADI Platinum Course Director status again!
There are only 61 Platinum CD’s in the world for 2010 so this is a major achievement. Well done Steve.
Inclusion within this guide for Course Directors / IDCs
This guide to the padi idc hasn’t been opened up to ‘all world’ yet and doesnt want to be a ‘volume’ advertiser of the PADI IDC but wants to be a quality producer of PADI IDC dive theory info and highlighter of quality PADI course directors, as such the founding Course Directors get to chat about other Course Directors that want to be included every month (idc-guide and the ‘founding course directors’ are allowed to veto any application) This ensures a high standard of future entries. To maintain our standards we have three categories that must be passed to guarantee inclusion, our guidelines are broadly:
1, Course Director / IDC Reputation, be in good standing with PADI and IDC students
2, Website standards / quality must be modern / unique and imformative
3, Any application may not be in direct Competition with other CDs
Membership of the IDC-Guide is reviewed annually and the minimum term of inclusion is 1 year.
Scuba DVDs
Often get asked about my experiences of diving and have put some of the best scuba diving video of the places I have lived / worked and visited together so you can experience what its like in Egypt / Thailand and the Philippines (coming soon)
